How to Use Waxy Maize Starch

Serving sizes, timing before, during and after training, and simple waxy maize shake recipes — matched to your training goal.

The right way to use waxy maize depends on what you want from it. Because plain waxy maize gives a slower, steadier blood sugar rise than sugar or maltodextrin, it shines before longer sessions and as an easy carb add-on, and it's less ideal when you need the fastest possible refuel.

Serving size

Most brands use a serving of about 50 g, which gives roughly 44–45 g of carbohydrate. Myprotein, for example, suggests about 50 g in 150–250 ml of water. A practical way to size it is by body weight and goal:

GoalTypical amountNotes
Light top-up / shake add-in15–25 gHalf a scoop in a protein shake
Pre-workout energy0.5 g per kg body weightRoughly 35–45 g for a 70–90 kg person
Post-workout recovery0.5–1.0 g per kg body weightPair with 20–40 g of protein
Bulking50–100 g per daySplit across shakes

Start small. Any new carb powder, especially in larger amounts, can cause bloating while your gut adjusts.

Timing

Before training (30–60 minutes)

This is where plain waxy maize fits best. Its slower release can give steadier energy for sessions over an hour, without a sugar rush. Mix 30–45 g with water or add it to a pre-workout shake. For long endurance sessions, a slower modified starch like UCAN SuperStarch is another option.

During training

For sessions under an hour, most people don't need carbs at all. For long endurance work, sports nutrition guidelines generally recommend around 30–60 g of carbs per hour, and up to about 90 g per hour for very long events using mixed sugars. Plain waxy maize isn't the best intra-workout carb: it's thicker in solution, and slow-absorbing starches have caused stomach upset when used in large amounts during exercise. Cyclic dextrin or a standard glucose-fructose sports drink is a better fit.

After training

If your next hard session is tomorrow, waxy maize in your post-workout shake works fine. Total daily carbs matter far more than the type for overnight glycogen recovery.

If you need to recover within a few hours (two-a-days, tournaments, multi-stage events), faster carbs like dextrose or maltodextrin will do the job better. The International Society of Sports Nutrition suggests around 1.2 g of carbs per kg of body weight per hour for the first four hours when fast glycogen recovery is needed.

How to mix it

Waxy maize mixes well in a shaker bottle with cold water or milk. It has almost no flavor, but larger amounts make drinks a little thicker. Tips:

Pre-workout steady energy shake

Post-workout recovery shake

Bulking smoothie

That last one lands around 900 calories.

Safety notes

Waxy maize is a food starch, and side effects are usually limited to bloating or gas at high doses. People with diabetes, or anyone managing blood sugar, should check with a doctor before adding carb supplements. This page is educational and isn't medical advice.
